Whenever I see La Paura I think of it as a companion piece to Eyes Wide Shut, or maybe it is the other way around. Adultery makes both films tick but in different ways. I think Phillip French was right on the money when he pointed out a Wizard of Oz thing in Kubrick's last work. Like Dorothy, Tom and Nicole go through fantasies and nightmares and at the end Dorothy's reassuring childish motto "there's no place like home" is ironically updated to the adult circumstantial adage "there's no sex like marital sex". Kubrick's take is intellectual, he never leaves the world of ideas to touch the ground. He taunts the audience first with an erotic movie and then with a thriller and refuses to deliver either of them. He was married to his third wife for 40 years, until he died. Rossellini was still married to Ingrid Bergman when he directed La Paura; they had been adulterous lovers and their infidelity widely criticized La Paura is a tale, a noirish one. The noir intrigue is solved and the tale has a happy ending. The city is noir; the country is tale, the territory where childhood is possible. The transition is operated in the most regular way: by car, a long-held shot taken from the front of the car as it rides into the road, as if we were entering a different dimension. Irene (Bergman) starts the movie: we just see a dark city landscape but her voice-over narration tells us of her angst and informs us that the story is a flashback, hers. Bergman's been cheating on her husband. At first guilt is just psychological torture but soon expands into economic blackmail and then grows into something else. From beginning to end the movie focuses on what Bergman feels, every other character is there to make her feel something. Only when the director gives away the plot before the main character can find out does he want us to feel something Bergman still can't. When she finds out, we have already experienced the warped mechanics of the situation and we may focus once again on the emotional impact it has on Bergman's Irene. In La Paura treasons are not imagined but real, nightmares are deliberate and the couple's venom suppurates in bitter ways. Needless to say, Ingrid has another of her rough rides in the movies but Rossellini doesn't dare put her away as he did in Europa 51, nor does he abandon her to the inscrutable impassivity of nature (Stromboli). His gift is less transcendent and fragile than the conclusion of Viaggio in Italia. He just gives his wife as much of a fairy tale ending as a real woman can have, a human landscape where she can finally feel at home. Back to the country, a half lit interior scene where shadows suggest the comfort of sleep. After all, it's the "fairy godmother" who speaks the last words in the movie.

Chuskit will have to get her grandfather to yield or she will have to accept the reality he has chosen for her.

　　1958年大跃进时期，北京的某街道积极分子刘桂英和其他家庭妇女，听完街道办事处洪书记动员妇女参加社会劳动的报告，在街道卫生委员鲁大嫂的建议下，大家决定生产老鼠夹来配合正在开展的除四害爱国卫生运动。在生产初期，她们碰到了各种各样的困难。她们不懂技术、缺乏原料，又受保守思想的阻碍，各种家务事不断打扰她们。鲁大嫂批评因家务事离开生产组的人。小业主王金才的老婆何彩霞在组里搬弄是非，使组里有的人要求退出生产组，刘桂英也发生动摇。洪书记及时帮助解决问题，刘桂英得到党的支持，坚定了信心。当夜，下起大雨，生产组的人都不约而同地赶来抢收工具和器材，这种一心为公的精神启发了每一个人。办事处要生产组试制一批弹簧，王金才是私营弹簧生产者，他也参加了生产组。一天，某农业机械学校前来订制为支援农业生产的四根拉簧，王金才以技术困难为借口，反对接受这一任务，刁难刘桂英，当他的阴谋被揭穿后，又装病不参加试制。刘桂英等经过一夜的苦战，终于试制成功。由于他们的成绩优良和生产建设的需要，生产组发展扩大建成弹簧厂，刘桂英担任厂长。1959年，洪书记把人民大会堂需要24万个沙发弹簧的任务交给了刘桂英，限期只有一个月。这一光荣任务大大鼓舞了全厂女工。正在搞地下工厂的王金才却百般阻挠。在全厂的辩论大会上，他的行径被彻底揭穿。全厂进入紧张的战斗。在党的支持和大厂的援助下，她们只用了25天就完成了24万个沙发簧的任务。宏伟的人民大会堂矗立在天安门广场西侧，刘桂英和姐妹们站在大会堂门口，展望自己工厂更壮丽的远景。

　　这是一部因男方拿不出给女方的定亲彩礼钱，想用古瓷器顶替礼金，而勾起了人们心中鬼火的贪念欲望，从而引起了一系列诙谐幽默的电影故事。暗中跟踪、抢夺，当文物还原为高仿的仿制品之后，心中有鬼的两路发财者，都随着美梦的破灭而烟消云散……
