　　讲述震惊世界的英国女孩麦卡恩失踪一事：2007年5月3日，正和父母及双胞胎弟弟在葡萄牙旅游胜地普拉亚-达卢什度假的即将满4岁的麦卡恩突然失踪。当晚，麦卡恩夫妇将三个孩子安置在租住的度假公寓睡觉后，去附近一家酒吧与朋友聚餐。据他们说，聚餐期间夫妇俩和朋友轮流每隔半个小时回公寓查看孩子状况。但当他们返回公寓时，马德琳不见了。葡萄牙警方闻讯后，立即派出大批警员和消防员四处搜寻，但是尽管警方前后梳理、筛选、排查了几百条线索，细致搜查了周围公寓和查访附近居民，麦卡恩仍然踪影全无，一个可爱的小女孩似乎就这样无端从人间蒸发了。麦卡恩的父母曾被怀疑是嫌疑犯，后被警方推翻，有人认为她早就死了，也有人称在世界各地见过她，不过从未找到人。
　　纪录剧集从2017年开始拍摄，包括对40多名撰稿人的采访、120小时的采访、存档新闻片段和重现。虽然包括对调查人员、记者和麦卡恩家族的朋友的采访，但没有麦卡恩夫妇的贡献。
